A recycled Tiki Bar – happy Polynesian design in the heart of Silesia!
Is it possible to recreate the atmosphere of Polynesian beaches and exotic cocktails served in tiki bars in one’s private garden, without making it kitschy? It appears that the answer to this question is yes, and the proof can be seen in Gliwice.
Gliwice’s tiki bar was designed of architect Mariusz Kuźniak (www.designoff.com.pl).
It is built from plastic transport pallets; it features a hanging table, also made from a pallet covered with an OSB panel. The bar’s guests can can sit at the table on barstools made of black painted metal barrels. The floor is panelled with plastic cladding, and colourful LED lights pulsate in an aluminium frame above the bar.
A gold-plated frame around a chalkboard with the words “Tiki Bar” is an interesting and elegant detail; the inscription leaves no doubts as to the style of the place.
Details play a crucial role in creating the unique atmosphere of bars like these; here, cocktails – especially popular in the Mai Tai and Zombie tiki bars – are served in glasses featuring images of the god Tiki. A statue of the god, in the form of a totem with scary, flashing LED eyes, is another element of the design of the bar.
Where did the idea for creating a place like this in a private garden come from? The architect explains that it was inspired by the fascination with surfing, love for beaches, and the need to capture the happy climate of the exotic islands of Polynesia.
In 1933, Don the Beachcomber became the pioneer who brought the idea of the tiki bar to Hollywood. He inspired other visionaries, and by the 1960s, dozens of tiki bars had been opened around the world.
On the wave of popularity of the commercial tiki bars, private bars in this style begun to appear in home gardens. The bar in Gliwice, designed by Mariusz Kuźniak’s DesignOff studio, fits within that trend.

Czy możliwe jest przywołanie we własnym ogrodzie klimatu polinezyjskich plaż i tiki barów, serwujących egzotyczne drinki, bez ocierania się o kicz? Wszystko wskazuje na to, że tak – a dowód na tę tezę cieszy oko na jednej z gliwickich działek rekreacyjnych.
Konstrukcja gliwickiego tiki baru wykonana według projektu pracowni DesignOff Mariusz Kuźniak www.designoff.com.pl, złożona jest z plastikowych ażurowych palet transportowych. Zwieszony z sufitu barowy stół to paleta pokryta płytą OSB. Zasiąść do niego można na hokerach, które powstały z pomalowanych na czarno metalowych beczek. Podłoga wyścielona jest plastikową okładziną, a nad barem, w aluminiowym profilu pulsują kolorowe światła led.
Ciekawym elementem nadającym temu miejscu skromnej elegancji jest złocona rama, w którą włożona została tablica z kredowym napisem “Tiki bar”. Napis ten nie pozostawia wątpliwości, w jakim miejscu się znajdujemy.
Architekt zadbał także o detale, które są nieodłącznym elementem takich lokali. Drinki – być może najpopularniejsze w tiki barach Mai Tai i Zombie – podawane są w szklankach z wizerunkiem boga Tiki. Jego postać odnaleźć można również w totemie, o nieco przerażających, świecących ledami oczach.
Skąd pomysł na organizację w ogrodzie takiego właśnie miejsca? Jak wyjaśnia architekt – z zainteresowania surfingiem, z miłości do plaż i z chęci uchwycenia klimatu kipiących szczęściem egzotycznych wysp Polinezji.
Jako pierwszy podjął się tego Don the Beachcomber, który w 1933 roku zaszczepił ideę i styl tiki baru w Hollywood. Za nim poszli kolejni wizjonerzy, dzięki którym w latach 60. na całym świecie było już kilkadziesiąt takich barów.
W ślad za komercyjnymi barami tiki, na fali ich popularności, zaczęły powstawać także prywatne, przydomowe konstrukcje o takim charakterze. Jedną z nich jest właśnie gliwicki tiki bar, autorstwa pracowni DesignOff Mariusz Kuźniak. www.designoff.com.pl
